‘Juan Martín reminded us of the power and beauty of flamenco pure and simple. No meretricious stage tricks, just one long enthralling sequence of instrumental solos, songs and dances by the brilliant troupe.’
– The Independent
‘He has a terrifyingly good technique and an absolute dominance of the guitar, filling the concert hall with crystalline clarity.’
– El Mundo
‘The whole evening was a marvellous display of the richness of one of the great musical traditions, and of its origins and its later offshoots, a tradition which while there are musicians as good as Martín and his colleagues to interpret it, is in no danger of becoming merely nostalgic….’
– Seen and Heard
‘[Martin] has evolved into a national treasure, a master of the guitar, loved by supporters throughout the world and an artist of great sensitivity and charisma. The overall quality of the performance was that of a formidable team of virtuosic musicians and dancers who unstintingly communicated their enthusiasm with the audience.’
– Classical Guitar Magazine
We are delighted to welcome back Juan Martín, ‘a giant of the flamenco guitar tradition’ (The Times), who returns to the National Concert Hall after a sold-out performance with the Waltons World Masters series in 2003 for another exhilarating evening of flamenco. Martín’s Flamenco Dance Ensemble is at the vanguard of modern flamenco, with a unique style that succeeds in embracing classical, jazz and modern harmonies while upholding the great flamenco tradition. This was the real thing: passionate, intense, sensual and spectacular.
Juan Martín Flamenco Guitar Masterclass
When Sunday, 3 April 2011
Where National Concert Hall, Dublin, Main Auditorium
Presented by Waltons New School of Music and National Concert Hall Learn & Explore
A celebrated virtuoso of flamenco guitar, Juan Martín has been voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine. His method book, El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra, now in its eleventh printing, has opened the complex art of the flamenco guitar to the whole world and is studied from Beijing to San Francisco.
Juan started the masterclass with a brief demonstration and then worked with participants on flamenco guitar techniques, harmony, improvisation and composition. He was also joined by Amparo Heredia, the most celebrated singer from Málaga, to demonstrate and instruct on how the ‘cante’ is accompanied by the guitar, how he follows her tones and fits in the guitar with the various songs that she sings spontaneously. Learning the complex skill of guitar accompaniment of the singing and dancing is essential to a better understanding of the whole art of flamenco.
