More Information

Workshop

Designed for post-primary school groups and taking place in schools or online, Waltons New School of Music’s three-hour Leaving Cert. Music Technology Workshop covers all of the requirements of the Music Technology core activity at Higher Level (25% of total marks) and is a useful and enjoyable introduction to music technology for for the Leaving Cert.

Through a combination of demonstrations and hands-on activities either in the classroom or on their own computers (if the workshop takes place online), students will learn all of the requirements of the Music Technology activity, including:

  • Stating the medium/system/software the student will use to input lines/parts/tracks and describing the edits he/she intends to make.
  • Inputting, saving and retrieving a two-part score. For the exam, students will be asked to input all or part of each line/part/track, at the discretion of the examiner.
  • Performing six edits. Edits should make musical sense.
  • Producing a recorded or score version of the music. While the recording or score may be produced in advance on the day of the examination, the candidate will be required to demonstrate the procedure involved to the examiner.
  • Playing two pieces from the standard electronic repertoire or compiling and playing to own backing track (at least 32 bars long).

The Leaving Cert. Music Technology Workshop is available by school or group enrolment only, with a maximum of 25 students in each workshop (depending on how many computers/workstations are available for students to use – with no more than two students per computer/workstation).

An online version of the workshop is also available. Please contact us if you are interested.

If individual students are interested in learning about the Leaving Cert. Music Technology option, they can take an online Intensive Lesson in the subject. See the Intensive Lessons tab.

‘I believe that learning to perform and appreciate music is a hugely life-affirming thing, at any age or stage. That has been my experience, and it is an absolute honour to find myself in the position where I can pass this joy and this love on to others through music education in lots of different settings. Teaching Leaving Cert. Music is an opportunity to do this in a unique way, as many of my students over the years have told me that even if school is difficult, coming to music class is something they look forward to in their week. It’s a privilege to guide students through this uniquely creative subject that is so close to my heart!’
