Flute Ensemble

‘The wonderful teacher, very supportive and patient, made for a very enjoyable experience. There was a lovely sense of camaraderie in the group learning and playing together.’
– S. Coyne

‘The teacher’s enthusiasm and patience, and sensitivity to the varied standards of playing within the group, allows everyone to reach a satisfying standard of music making. A great opportunity to experience ensemble music making where the whole becomes greater than the parts!’
– J. Dillon

While the New School’s Flute Ensemble explores a range of classical and popular music and develops ensemble and musicianship skills, it is also an opportunity to meet other flute players and make great music together!

Ensemble Description

The New School’s Flute Ensemble – winner of our Ensemble Prize in 2010 and the Sligo Feis Ceoil’s Chamber Music Cup in 2017 – is open to flute students of Grade 3 standard and above and works on a wide range of repertoire in a variety of styles. The emphasis is on having fun and learning classical and popular music together in an informal and non-competitive atmosphere. While the group focuses on developing ensemble and general musicianship skills, it is also an opportunity to meet other flute players and make great music together!

Sinhué Flores

Sinhué FloresHailing from Mexico, Sinhué (pronounced sin-whay) came to the New School with over thirty years of dedicated performing and teaching experience. His diverse background includes performing widely on three continents and recording eleven albums as a flute soloist, orchestral musician, woodwind quintet flautist and flute ensemble leader, as well as teaching students of all ages and skill levels in a range of different contexts. He has also worked with several conservatoires, academies and music schools to develop their chamber music curricula. A versatile musician, Sinhué has both performed and taught in the Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, Latin-American, Jazz, Rock and Ska genres. He has also received a number of prestigious awards and honours, including the Merit Medal from the State of Mexico Conservatoire of Music, the PECDA-FOCAEM Bursary Award for his recording of Ibero-American music (in two consecutive editions), the designation of Vice President for Creative Industries and Cultural Heritage of the RGMX-IE Global Network of Qualified Talents, and the unanimously-elected designation as numbered member of the State of Mexico Atheneum. Sinhué’s work with the New School focuses on equipping students with confidence through personalised instruction that combines traditional and innovative techniques, fostering their unique artistic expression while providing targeted feedback for maximum growth and enjoyment.

‘Music has the power to connect contrasting views, and it allows to understand and experience cultures very different from our own. It can also turn on hidden parts of our minds, as well as balance, guide and shape our thoughts and emotions. Learning to play the flute and other wind instruments is learning to transform a basic physical function into a refined vibration, and then into the most wonderful music!’
