Waltons New School of Music
‘The wonderful teacher, very supportive and patient, made for a very enjoyable experience. There was a lovely sense of camaraderie in the group learning and playing together.’
– S. Coyne
‘The teacher’s enthusiasm and patience, and sensitivity to the varied standards of playing within the group, allows everyone to reach a satisfying standard of music making. A great opportunity to experience ensemble music making where the whole becomes greater than the parts!’
– J. Dillon
While the New School’s Flute Ensemble explores a range of classical and popular music and develops ensemble and musicianship skills, it is also an opportunity to meet other flute players and make great music together!
Ensemble Description
The New School’s Flute Ensemble – winner of our Ensemble Prize in 2010 and the Sligo Feis Ceoil’s Chamber Music Cup in 2017 – is open to flute students of Grade 3 standard and above and works on a wide range of repertoire in a variety of styles. The emphasis is on having fun and learning classical and popular music together in an informal and non-competitive atmosphere. While the group focuses on developing ensemble and general musicianship skills, it is also an opportunity to meet other flute players and make great music together!
Naoise Ó Briain, the Flute Ensemble director, is available to speak by phone with those interested in joining. Please let us know via our Contact Form or by phone if you would like him to get in touch.

Safety & COVID-19
The health and safety of both students and staff at the New School is of the utmost importance to us, and we have made a number of changes to the school, its equipment and our policies to make in-school tuition (tuition taking place on the New School premises) safe during the time of COVID-19. These include:
- Perspex screens in every classroom.
- Installation of HEPA air filtration/purification units where necessary – especially in classrooms where wind instruments and voice (singing) are taught.
- Antiseptic dispensers available throughout the school.
- Cleaning and disinfection of both classroom instruments and furniture between lessons and classes.
- Regular cleaning of public spaces.
See our COVID-19 Safety Policy page for more information on what we have done, as well as the protocols we expect all in-school students and visitors to follow.
Naoise Ó Briain
Naoise grew up in a family surrounded by music. At the age of six, he began studying piano and recorder at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and went on to study flute there, receiving a BA in Music Performance with first class honours. He then studied at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he received a Masters of Music degree. He has also received both Associate and Licentiate RIAM teaching diplomas in flute and recorder. Naoise has performed on numerous occasions with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Ulster Orchestra – and with these he has appeared on stage with many world-renowned artists, including Juan Diego Flórez, Bryn Terfel, Finbar Furey, Ronnie Drew, John Wilson, Eri Klas, Matthias Bamert, Atso Almila and Rafael Payare. He has also toured extensively throughout Ireland, Europe, the United States and China, and performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the National Concert Hall, 3 Arena Dublin, Ulster Hall, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and Konzerthaus Berlin. As a classical musician with deep roots in Irish traditional music, Naoise is in great demand; he has performed numerous times with John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and his Irish flute playing was featured in the 2016 film The Siege of Jadotville. In addition to an extensive performance career, Naoise has taught flute and recorder for over a decade, both privately and at music schools in Dublin and Berlin.
