Sterling Paterson

Drum Kit

Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, Sterling brings to the New School over two decades of performing and teaching experience. Although he is a versatile drummer and teacher in a range of genres, he has primarily been known as a heavy hitting drummer in Vancouver's rock and metal scenes. His drumming career has taken him all around Canada, playing and touring with several new and established bands, as well as teaching dozens of aspiring drummers. Sterling spent the better part of a decade studying under some of the most prominent Canadian drummers while completing a degree in Audio and Sound Design at Columbia Academy in Vancouver. He is well known for his infectious passion for the craft and above all seeks to pass on the sheer joy of playing the instrument, with the goal of providing a relaxed, fun environment for his students so they can find their own voices on the drums and ultimately have all the tools required to express themselves musically in any capacity. Sterling always puts what motivates each student before anything else, and his lessons involve learning and playing a lot of great music, sight reading, ear training and unlocking each person's innate creativity, while keeping the lessons either as loose or as structured as needed. He's a great choice for students of all ages and skill levels who want to master their craft.
'I've always said that we don't work music, we play it. Throughout my life, music and drumming has always been there for me. The lifelong friends I've made, the highs and lows, the treasured memories – they have all started and ended with music. Sometimes it's brutally honest, sometimes it's humbling, but at the end of the day there's no greater joy than being able to speak a language that needs no words and can communicate with every human being it reaches.'
