Miguel Ángel Lejarza

Born into a Spanish family in Mexico, Miguel Ángel (Angel) studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City and later at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música in Madrid, continuing his studies of Renaissance and Baroque music at the Schuola Cantorum de Paris, where he graduated with first class honours. He went on to attend masterclasses with José Luis Rodrigo at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. Angel was five times awarded the Prize of Arts in Mexico by the National Council for Culture and the Arts, and he also won the Mexico Conservatory Competition and the Rachmaninoff Conservatory International Competition in Paris. He was a founder member and head of the Guitar Department at the Conservatorio de Música del Estado de Mexico, has lectured at the Casa de Música de Tlaxcala and the Universidad Iberoamericana of Mexico, and has sat on judging panels for several national and international music festivals. In addition to teaching with the New School since 2001, Angel has been guest teacher and performer at music festivals in Europe, Asia and the US, and he has recorded four solo albums with the Aulos label.
