Waltons New School of Music offers tuition in the widest range of instruments, subjects and genres (classical, traditional, jazz, rock/pop, world music) of any music school in Ireland, as well as a variety of group courses and workshops for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Two gift options are available:

  • Gift Certificates Individually printed with the recipient’s name, gift certificates can cover entire courses, a term or more of lessons, or single Intensive Lessons.
  • Gift Cards Purchased for a particular value (minimum €25), electronic gift cards can be used by the recipient towards all lessons, courses and workshops taught at Waltons New School of Music, as well as towards instruments, accessories and books from Waltons Music.

€53 • One-Hour Intensive Lesson

Our one-off Intensive Lessons are available for almost all instruments (including voice/singing) and subjects taught at the school. They can be an end in themselves and are also a great way for people to ‘try out’ tuition and instruments.

€62 • One-Hour Bodhrán Taster

The bodhrán, a wood and goatskin drum, is the heartbeat of Irish traditional music. Taught by one of the New School’s renowned trad teachers, our Bodhrán Taster introduces essential techniques as well as the two most important rhythms of Irish music – reels and jigs.

€64 • One-Hour Intensive Lesson for Two People

A shared Intensive Lesson can be a great experience for two!

€66 • One-Hour Tin Whistle Taster

A simple tube of metal with six finger-holes, the Irish tin whistle is both a beautiful and expressive instrument. Taught by one of the New School’s renowned trad teachers, our Tin Whistle Taster introduces the basics of tin whistle playing – as well as some great Irish tunes. The Taster includes a high quality Waltons Brass D Tin Whistle.

€150 • 10-Week Introduction to Music Theory

Do you know someone who’d like to be able to read music? While playing by ear can be enjoyable, the ability to read music opens doors to a much richer musical landscape – and learning to do it needn’t be intimidating. Music Fundamentals I is an enjoyable and student-friendly course that introduces the essentials of reading and writing musical notation, as well as elementary musical grammar, in just 10 weeks.

€170 • 11-Week Term of Our Sing Your Heart Out Choir

Led by the renowned choral director Cathy McEvoy, our Sing Your Heart Out Choir is just the ticket for banishing the winter blues! Participants have the opportunity to sing some great songs with others, to find and improve their voices, to spend an hour and a half every week ‘singing their hearts out’ and making new friends in the process, and to perform in public for fun and entertainment.

€185 • 12-Week Term of Our Ukulele Ensemble

Do you know someone who loves playing ukulele? Designed for ukulele players at all levels, our Ukulele Ensemble works on and performs a huge range of music, arranged to be accessible for near-beginners but also including elements that are challenging for more experienced players.

€190 • 12-Week Term of Our Sing & Swing Jazz Vocal Ensemble

For all those who love to sing and swing in group harmony, our Sing & Swing Jazz Vocal Ensemble is led by the renowned jazz singer, conductor and teacher Melanie O’Reilly, who has many years’ experience teaching jazz and conducting jazz choirs. Material includes songs from the Great American Songbook as well as repertoire ranging from blues to bebop to ballads and beyond.

€200 • 10-Week ’Introducing’ Instrumental or Singing Course for Beginners

Our ‘Introducing’ courses are designed for absolute beginners (no previous musical experience required) and provide excellent foundation tuition in a range of popular instruments/subjects.

€200 • 10-Week Blues or Trad Guitar Course

Taught by John Sweeney, a superb guitar player and teacher, our ‘Basics’ guitar courses are designed for intermediate guitar students/players with some previous experience and introduce specialised styles and techniques.

€210 • 10-Week Introduction to Jazz Piano

Taking place in the New School’s Digital Piano Lab and taught by Johnny Taylor, one of the finest jazz pianists and teachers in Ireland, Jazz Piano Basics is a hands-on course designed to give classical piano students of at least intermediate level (Grade 5 or equivalent) a solid foundation in jazz piano. For the last two classes, students have the opportunity to apply their skills by working with a professional jazz bassist and jazz drummer.

€215 • 12-Week Term of Our Adult String Ensemble, Flute Ensemble or Rig-a-Jig Trad Music Group

Do you know an adult violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute or Irish traditional instrument player who would like to play with others in a fun, relaxed setting and learn some essential ensemble skills along the way? Directed by excellent musicians and educators, our Adult String Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Ukulele Ensemble and Rig-a-Jig Traditional Music Group are highly recommended.

€225 • 12-Week Term of One of Our Jazz Ensembles

For anyone interested in jazz, we offer three levels of Jazz Ensemble tuition, for students of all instruments, at the New School. Jazz Ensemble I is designed for students with no previous jazz experience. Jazz Ensemble II is an intermediate ensemble designed for students with some jazz experience or who have taken Jazz Ensemble I. And Jazz Ensemble III is an advanced ensemble designed for students with more extensive jazz experience or who have taken Jazz Ensemble II. All three ensembles are directed by David Mooney, a renowned jazz musician and educator.

€240 • 6-Week Songwriting Workshop

Whether you are new to songwriting and would like to take your music beyond the shower, or you have already written songs but would like to have a better grounding in the basics, our Songwriting Workshop (6 weeks, 2 hours per week), taught by the acclaimed songwriter and musician Kieran McEvoy, will help you to develop your creative ideas – in any musical style – and turn them into finished songs.

€310 • 10-Week Vocal Workshops

For the singer in your life, our acclaimed Vocal Workshops are excellent 10-week (90 minutes per week) courses for singers with some previous experience. Each workshop also includes a final performance in which participants showcase the material they have worked on before an audience of friends, family and fellow students.

€310 • 10-Week Introduction to Music Technology

Taking place in the New School’s Music Technology Lab, Introducing Music Technology is an inexpensive, practical and hands-on 10-week course (90 minutes per week) designed to teach absolute beginners how a PC and home studio technology can be used to record and produce virtually anything at home.

€325 • 12-Week Term of Private (One-to-One) Music Lessons

The New School offers private music lessons six days a week and in the widest range of instruments, subjects and genres of an of any music in Ireland. The fee above is for 30-minute lessons in our 13-week Second Term, which runs from January to April, but 45- and 60-minute lessons are also available. Most people are very busy with their day-to-day lives, and there isn’t a lot of time put aside for each other. Shared Partner Lessons are an enjoyable and satisfying way to explore music together. The fee above is for 30-minute partner lessons for our 12-week Second Term, but 45- and 60-minute partner lessons are also available.
