Congratulations to the winners of our 27th Annual Martin A. Walton Memorial Scholarship Competition!

This year’s Competition took place at the New School on Sunday, 21 May 2023. First Prize winners will receive certificates and full-year scholarships for the 2023-2024 school year, and Second and Third Prize winners will receive certificates and vouchers that can be used for additional tuition with the New School.


This year’s winners are:

Young Student of the Year

FIRST PRIZE

Mia Challoner • Voice
(Sinéad Flynn • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Mia’s ‘natural talent’, ‘excellent dynamic range’, ‘good phrasing’, ‘confident and dynamic’ presentation and ‘moving’ delivery.

SECOND PRIZE

Twig McKenna • Piano
(Daniel Smith • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Twig’s ‘musical and confident playing’, ‘good articulation’, ‘well-chosen programme’ and ‘well-wrought performance’.

THIRD PRIZE

Zoe Lin • Violin
(David Burns • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Zoe’s ‘good technique’, ‘varied programme’ and ability to bring out ‘the spirit of the pieces and intentions of the composers’.


Mature Student of the Year

FIRST PRIZE

Carolin Zaniewicz • Piano
(Varo Khachatryan • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Carolin’s ‘spirited performance’, ‘superb delivery’, ‘big energy’, ‘wonderful tone and dynamics’ and ‘poise and confidence in execution’.

SECOND PRIZE

Livia Bartolomé Vergel • Voice
(Sinéad Flynn • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Livia’s ‘rich, full voice’, ‘great phrasing and understanding’, ‘poise and confidence’ and ‘ability to bring the listener right into the music’.

THIRD PRIZE

Laila McDonald • Voice
(Sinéad Flynn • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Laila’s ‘strong expression’, ‘powerful, well controlled voice’, ‘confident delivery’ and ‘excellent combination of dramatic gesture with vocal delivery’.


Most Promising Beginner

FIRST PRIZE

Charlie Weng • Piano
(Varo Khachatryan • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Charlie’s ‘careful attention to articulation’, ‘very appropriate choice of programme’, ‘good dynamic variation’ and ‘impressive progress’.

SECOND PRIZE

Aoife Quinn • Voice
(Sinéad Flynn • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Aoife’s ‘perfect intonation’, ‘very good phrasing and dynamics’, ‘impeccable rhythm’, ‘excellent presentation’ and ‘very convincing performance’.

THIRD PRIZE

Emmy Huang • Flute
(Andrew Keeling • Teacher)

The adjudicators commented on Emmy’s ‘very confident presentation’, ‘excellent communication’, ‘very pleasing performance’ and ‘huge progress’.
