Andrew Keeling
Waltons New School of Music Faculty
Concert Flute • Guitar • Theory & Musicianship • Composition
Hailing from Staffordshire in the UK, Andrew is a renowned composer (with compositions performed by the BBC Philharmonic, Evelyn Glennie and the Hilliard Ensemble, among others); flautist (David Cross, Tim Bowness); guitarist (Andrew Keeling and Otherworld, Gong Farmers, Tim Bowness); and writer (musical guides to King Crimson and Comsat Angels, among others). His composition teachers were John Casken, Nicola Lefanu and Sir John Tavener; his flute teachers, Atarah Ben Tovim and Trevor Wye; and his guitar teachers, Robert Fripp, Peter Manley and David Taplin. Andrew holds BMus, MMus and PhD degrees (the last in composition from Manchester University.) He also holds ALCM, LLCM and FLCM diplomas in flute and an ABRSM diploma in classical guitar. (The last of his flute diplomas, the highest award of the London College of Music, demands a truly exceptional demonstration of ability and is broadly equivalent to a Master’s degree.) Andrew has extensive experience teaching flute, guitar and composition both in higher and further education and at school level, and he has performed widely as a flute recitalist, guitarist and music improviser.
‘I began teaching professionally in the mid-1970s, and it is something I have always greatly enjoyed doing. I find it a natural thing to do, having taught a great many students from beginner level to diploma standard, and it complements well my other work as a composer and performer.’
Meet Your Teacher
